Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Patellofemoral pain is felt around or behind the kneecap and is typically aggravated by running, stairs, squatting, jumping or sitting with the knee bent for a prolonged period. Contributing factors differ between individuals and can include a rapid change in training, reduced quadriceps or hip capacity, movement strategy and sensitivity of the joint. Best-practice treatment combines clear education and load management with progressive knee- and hip-targeted exercise. Patellar taping, foot orthoses or running retraining can be useful for selected patients. Return to sport should be gradual and guided by symptoms and recovery of function.
